SUMO are a three-piece instrumental space rock band, with each member embodying a vital element in the spark, energy, and atmosphere needed to ignite their sound.
Founded in 2013 and based in Miami, FL, SUMO has independently released two full-length albums and three ambient singles (the ATMOS series) on their own label, Rikishi Records. The band’s essence can be captured in two words:
Pretty. Heavy.
SUMO’s third full length release, III (three)
Recorded at Sound Artillery Studios with Jonathan Nuñez, is available on all streaming services Dec. 13, 2024.
III takes you on an unrelenting sonic journey, launching boldly with the opening track, “Alyssa,” and winding seamlessly toward lead single “Shadow of Antiope.” From there, the epic, 8-minute sprawl of “Eta Carinae” propels you into a pulsating free-fall through space before culminating in the final landing on thunderous closer “Enceladus.”

“SUMO as a sum of its parts is forever locked in the turbulent cycle of creation and destruction; it is ethereal beauty and desolate horror. Infinitely literary and cinematic. Intelligent and brash... a yin and yang of science and religion also locked in turbulence. Composed and ordered so as to allow improvisation and anarchic wail.”
- excerpt from Abel Folgar (local music journalist)
